ODBMS.ORG Portal Now Host of ODMG 3 Standard

Migration of leading object database standard ODMG strengthens the Internet’s most up to date resource portal for education and research on object databases

ODBMS.ORG, a vendor-independent non-profit group of high-profile software experts lead by Prof. Roberto Zicari, today announced the migration of ODMG.ORG into the ODBMS.ORG portal on object database technology which will now host ODMG resources for version 1-3 as well as resources on the recent development of the 4th generation standard along with a wealth of other current resources on object databases in one single location.

The consolidation of resources gives researchers and students, as well as any software developer with interest in object oriented programming and persistence, a one-stop experience to find nearly 1,000 resources aggregated and selected by a team of more than 100 internationally renown experts on object database technology including names such as Alan Kay, Suad Alagic, Scott Ambler, Philippe Kahn, Michael Blaha, William Cook, and Carl Rosenberger.

The decision by the former ODMG consortium to join forces is a great endorsement for the portal which just celebrated its second anniversary and has quickly grown to be the most significant resource of its kind in the Internet.

“ODBMS.ORG is an outstanding resource to the community,” says Rick Cattell, Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems and a lead of the ODMG consortium before it was disbanded in 2001. “The group has done a great job re-igniting the ODBMS research and educational communities. The community no longer debates whether ODBMSs or RDBMSs are ‘best’, recognizing that the two will continue to co-exist. ODBMSs provide the only practical solution for many applications.”

The rapid growth and popularity of the ODBMS.ORG portal reflects the fast growing popularity of object databases, especially since the advent of its second generation, native and open source contenders, which have made object database technology available for any Java or .NET developer at low or no cost. ODBMS.ORG amplifies this trend by aggregating research and educational materials to inform a new breed of software developers, who are no longer willing to accept the immense pain and productivity loss induced by the object-relational mismatch between object-oriented programming and relational databases and who seek to use ODBMS technology in the right kind of context.

ODBMS.ORG is provided by ODBMS.ORG e.V., a non-profit association enabled through free contributions as well as proceedings from Adwords, a bookstore and sponsorships through the three leading object database vendors db4objects, Progress, and Versant.

About ODBMS.ORG
ODBMS.ORG (www.odbms.org) is a vendor-independent, not-for-profit educational program on object database technology and the integration between object-oriented programming and databases. Designed by Prof. Roberto Zicari of Frankfurt University, the program’s goal is to promote and further the use of object databases – by offering free resources for students, faculty and researchers at universities and research centers, as well as for JAVA and .NET developers in the commercial and the open source world. Content is provided by a panel of internationally recognized experts, who share research articles and teaching materials with the community via the organization’s Web portal.
