Hadoop is an open source framework designed to rapidly ingest, store, and analyze large data sets. Hadoop is well suited for batch processing where immediate interactive analytics are not required. But today, Hadoop does not support the transactional workloads you need to run your business. On the other hand, traditional operational databases, which are designed to handle transactions, struggle to handle really large data sets.

Trafodion is an open source project sponsored by HP, incubated at HP Labs and HP-IT, to develop an enterprise-class SQL-on-HBase solution targeting big data transactional or operational workloads. Trafodion is licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0; see Trafodion Open Source License. The name “Trafodion” (the Welsh word for transaction, pronounced “Tra-vod-eee-on”) was chosen specifically to emphasize the differentiation that Trafodion provides in closing a critical gap in the Hadoop ecosystem. Trafodion builds on the scalability, elasticity, and flexibility of Hadoop. Trafodion extends Hadoop to provide guaranteed transactional integrity, enabling new kinds of big data applications to run on Hadoop.
