NuoDB Recognized by Gartner in Critical Capabilities for Operational Database Management Systems

Elastic SQL database achieves top five score in all four use cases

Cambridge, MA – October 11, 2016

NuoDB, the elastic SQL database for cloud applications, today announced Gartner has given NuoDB’s scale-out SQL database one of the five highest scores in all four Use Cases (Traditional Transactions, Distributed Variable Data, Lightweight Events and Observations, and Hybrid Transactional / Analytic Processing) in its recent Critical Capabilities in Operational Database Management Systems.

NuoDB believes this distinction demonstrates how its innovative architecture uniquely supports the cloud’s on-demand advantages without sacrificing the familiarity and reliability of an ACID-compliant SQL database.
Gartner recently predicted, “By 2018, more than 70% of new DBMS deployments will leverage cloud for at least one use case.”[2] Not only are organizations turning to public and private cloud as an extension – and sometimes a replacement – of on-premises infrastructure, they also increasingly rely on software as a service (SaaS) applications.
Software companies need to re-evaluate their database options as they migrate from a perpetual-license, on-premises-driven model to a services-based one. NuoDB combines the scale-out simplicity, elasticity, and continuous availability that cloud applications require with the transactional consistency and durability that databases of record demand.
Unlike traditional monolithic relational databases, NuoDB can easily scale out on demand and provide automatic redundancy and continuous availability without incurring prohibitively high costs. In addition, in contrast to NoSQL systems, NuoDB helps software vendors simplify their applications by keeping data management responsibilities in the database where it belongs.
According to the report, “Data and analytics leaders, architects and implementers can use this Critical Capabilities research as part of an evaluation of products based on what Gartner considers to be the nine most important functional capabilities across four major use cases.”
“Migrating to a SaaS model is a survival imperative for software companies today.  To be successful, these organizations need a strategic database partner that can help them easily scale on demand without sacrificing reliability,” said Ariff Kassam, vice president of products at NuoDB. “NuoDB helps these forward-thinking organizations get to market faster and save money at the same time by providing a familiar SQL interface, automating disaster recovery and continuous availability, and minimizing capital expenditures.”
