Maurice van Keulen is assistant professor with the database group of the University of Twente.

He studied computer science at the University of Twente and received his Msc. in 1992. His work as a research assistant in the ESPRIT project IMPRESS gradually shifted towards PhD research, which resulted in November 1997 in a PhD with a thesis entitled “Formal operation definition in object-oriented databases”.

From August 1997 until April 1999, he worked with the company Ordina Utopics Front Office B.V. as an information architect. His subsequent assistant professorship at the University of Twente was interrupted for 9 months in 2002/2003 for a sabatical with the DBIS-group at the University of Konstanz, Germany.

His research interests center around developing generic and efficient data management for non-traditional database applications or non-traditional use of a DBMS. Topics include XML databases, semi-structured data, schema and data integration, uncertainty in data, data heterogeneity, DBMS extensibility, (multimedia) information retrieval.
