Susan D. Urban received the B.S, M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in computer science in 1976, 1980, and 1987, respectively, from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She is currently a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Arizona State University. She was previously an Assistant Professor at the University of Miami from 1987-1989, an Assistant Professor at Arizona State University from 1989-1994, and an Associate Professor at Arizona State University from 1994-2001.

Her research interests include object-oriented data modeling; event, rule, and transaction processing for enterprise application integration; and service-oriented computing. Dr. Urban has been the recipient of several grants from the National Science Foundation for her research on constraints, active rule processing in centralized and distributed environments, the use of databases in engineering design, and the development of innovative teaching concepts for database instruction. She has also been a co-investigator on a sub-contract from Boeing Defense and Space Group as part of a project from the Defense Advanced Projects Agency investigating the integration of distributed product data in engineering design. She has published over 80 refereed papers and book chapters on the results of her research and is a co-author of An Advanced Course in Database Systems: Beyond Relational Databases (Prentice Hall, 2005).

She has served on the Editorial Board of the IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering and is currently serving on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Computing and Information Science in Engineering. She has also served as the co-editor of special issues in the Integrated Computer-Aided Engineering Journal, Computing Systems Journal, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, Theory and Practice of Object Systems, and the Journal of Computing and Information Science and Engineering. She has served on the organizing and program committees of numerous database conferences, with her current conference activity including the International Conference on e-Business Engineering, the International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems, the International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications, the International Conference on Software Applications and the Internet, and the ACM Conference on Computer Science Education. Dr. Urban is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery, the IEEE Computer Society, and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
