As data structures get more complex and data volume grows, traditional relational databases — and their need for a pre-defined schema — are falling short. Enterprise architecture (EA) pros seek solutions that are designed to scale-out horizontally on lower-cost commodity servers, manage semi-structured data more efficiently, and provide a flexible data model to support content and document management system and next-generation web, mobile, and cloud applications. NoSQL document databases are optimized to store, access, and manage semi-structured information like documents. In Forrester’s 57 criteria evaluation of NoSQL document database vendors, we evaluated MongoDB, MarkLogic, Cloudant, and Couchbase. We scored factors like performance, scalability, integration, security, high availability, workload management, and form factor. This report details our findings on how well each solution fulfills the criteria and where it stands in relation to other offerings. EA pros can leverage this analysis to select the right NoSQL document database solution for their business needs.
