Q1. You just announced vector search at the edge as a new feature in Couchbase Capella™. What is it? and what is it useful for?

To succeed in today’s digital landscape, our customers are increasingly seeking to develop AI-driven, adaptive applications that deliver hyper-personalized, context-aware experiences to users. In an era where edge and mobile devices are the primary interfaces for user interaction, these devices become crucial in delivering solutions that truly appeal to end users. Enterprises aiming to create applications that seamlessly “adapt” to both the situational context and individual user needs must embrace a combination of generative AI and predictive analytics, deeply integrated within their applications. This evolution starts with the simplification of complex data architectures and the integration of advanced AI technologies like generative AI with vector search capabilities and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) frameworks. 

Through these advancements, we are not just facilitating the creation of adaptive, user-centric applications; we are redefining the possibilities of mobile and IoT device engagement, setting a new standard for personalized user experiences in the digital age.

We are enabling this capability by being the first to announce a vector search functionality optimized for mobile and edge computing environments. By embedding vector search directly within our search engine, we empower our customers to significantly enhance the precision of Large Language Model (LLM) responses. Leveraging the familiar SQL++ query language, our solution combines text, vector, range and geospatial search capabilities into one platform, while facilitating multidimensional scaling to optimize resource efficiency. This eliminates the need for data to traverse back and forth across networks, thereby ensuring superior application performance directly on users’ devices.

Q2. What kind of new class of AI-powered adaptive applications could benefit from this new feature?

Incorporating vector search into our platform enables new user experiences and enhances existing capabilities by combining it with generative AI models to improve the user experience of customer applications, ranging from chatbots and recommendation engines to advanced semantic searches. This integration facilitates a more accurate, intuitive interaction between applications and end-users, ensuring that responses and recommendations are both relevant and personalized.

Consider a scenario where a user is looking for shoes to match a specific outfit. By utilizing our platform, the user can effortlessly upload a photo of their outfit to a mobile application. This action initiates a sophisticated, hybrid search that encompasses various dimensions: vector-based style matching, textual descriptions, numerical data such as price ranges, operational stock levels and even geospatial information to locate nearby availability. This hybrid search capability, powered by Couchbase, eliminates the need for querying multiple databases — a common source of latency and degraded performance. Through a single, streamlined query or search API, Couchbase simplifies complex search criteria, offering users precise results that align with their specific needs and preferences.

Q3. How do you define an adaptive application then? Can you give us an example?

Adaptive applications are designed to dynamically modify their behavior and features in response to a variety of factors, including user preferences, environmental factors, incoming data, or evolving scenarios. The core objective of these applications is to deliver a deeply personalized and agile user experience by intelligently adjusting their functionality to align with the user’s immediate needs and context.

Consider the case of a sophisticated navigation app that recalibrates its route recommendations in real time, factoring in up-to-the-minute traffic conditions and estimated travel times. Similarly, envision a scenario where adaptive applications seamlessly interlink account details across a user’s chosen services. This could enable synergistic communication between a bank, airline, and hotel loyalty programs, facilitating instantaneous benefits such as a real-time upgrade to “platinum” status as the user achieves this milestone.

These examples illustrate the transformative potential of adaptive applications. By leveraging real-time data and user-centric design, the user experience is enhanced and a more intuitive, responsive experience is provided for the users. 

Q4. What does it mean in practice that you offer a vector search optimized for running onsite, across clouds, to mobile and IoT devices at the edge?

AI is poised to become ubiquitous, seamlessly operating across diverse environments — on-premises, in the cloud and at the edge. Our focus is to ensure that our customers can leverage the full potential of AI regardless of where their applications are deployed. This is why we are implementing vector search functionality across our product portfolio ranging from Capella Database-as-a-Service, Couchbase Enterprise and Couchbase Mobile.

Particularly, our mobile and edge-embedded database distinguishes itself by enabling applications to synchronize data effectively, even in scenarios where network connectivity is unreliable or unavailable. This is enabled by Couchbase’s offline-first model. This capability ensures that critical application functionalities remain uninterrupted, providing a seamless, resilient user experience across all touchpoints. This not only enhances application performance and reliability but also makes adaptive applications universally accessible, transforming how businesses interact with technology at every level.

Q5. You have brought together vector search and real-time data analysis on the same platform. What are the benefits? 

Our unified platform strategy significantly simplifies the architectural complexity that often accompanies AI integration. In the realm of AI, each additional database layer introduces manageability and reliability challenges, along with the added complexity of developing the applications. The data silos and fragmentation created by multiple databases cause delays and latencies when trying to process the freshest data in the shortest time. This also makes it exceedingly difficult to diagnose and correct problems, like AI hallucinations, with the generated output. 

Having real-time analytics adjacent to AI-powered applications facilitates real-time aggregations in prompts. By combining vector search and real-time analysis on one platform, Couchbase makes it simpler for organizations to streamline data processing, more quickly improve user experiences with personalization and scale workloads without compromising performance. 

With Couchbase, development teams can more easily build trustworthy adaptive applications that run wherever they wish. This unique approach also consolidates technology stacks to deliver better cost-efficiency.

Q6. Talking about GenAI-based applications, how do you manage hallucinations and accuracy?

The concern surrounding AI-generated content — specifically, the risk of “AI hallucinations” where responses are unreliable or misleading, mirrors the skepticism often directed toward using Wikipedia as an unverified source of information. This challenge underscores the critical need for advanced methodologies like Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and vector search technologies to ensure the reliability and integrity of AI responses. RAG represents an emerging framework for Generative AI, augmenting Large Language Models (LLMs) with the necessary context to significantly enhance the quality of their outputs. RAG’s benefits include enhanced accuracy and relevance of generated content, incorporation of up-to-date or domain-specific knowledge, incorporation of private data without exposing it as “training data,” improved efficiency by accessing external information sources and versatility across various applications, from chatbots to content creation, making it a powerful tool in the AI and NLP toolkit.

The introduction of vector search and LLM frameworks to the Couchbase platform will facilitate RAG processes to improve the accuracy of specific AI interactions within the application.

Q7. You have announced that developers can build such applications using SQL++ queries using vector index, removing the need to use multiple indexes or products. What does it mean in practice?

Couchbase uses a consistent SQL++ query language across its platform. This allows developers who already know SQL to easily build applications on a single platform with a single query language rather than having to use different query languages, reducing complexity and saving developers time.

Q8. How does your columnar service and vector search work together?

Couchbase’s multipurpose access patterns allow for consolidation upon a single pool of data to address data sharing, complexity and accuracy concerns. Vector search supports balancing what gets shared with LLMs and where LLMs should focus their attention using vectors, while our columnar analytics address real-time aggregation and write-back capabilities needed for the applications. With Capella columnar, customers can execute large-scale, real-time analytic calculations that can be used as new data in applications without having to worry about the latency gap that has forever existed between analytics and operational databases. Together with vector search, customers can build and deliver adaptive applications that incorporate real-time calculated data needed for AI interactions. 

Q9. You have extended your AI partner ecosystem with LangChain. What do you expect from this new partnership?

Our integration with LangChain and LlamaIndex provides developers with even more LLM choices when building adaptive applications. These platform integrations support the RAG process for improving the accuracy and reliability of AI interactions with the application. 

According to Harrison Chase, the CEO and co-founder of LangChain, “Retrieval has become the predominant way to combine data with LLMs. Many LLM-driven applications demand user-specific data beyond the model’s training dataset, relying on robust databases to feed in supplementary data and context from different sources. Our integration with Couchbase provides customers another powerful database option for vector store so they can more easily build AI applications.”
