Innovating the Future of Healthcare Monitoring:  Q&A With Joseph Zaccaria.

Neteera’s Joe Zaccaria on their award-winning innovation in Ambient Sensing for Patient Monitoring, recognized in the InterSystems Impact Award 2025

Q1. Patient monitoring technologies have been available on the market for some time. However, Neteera stands apart with ambient technology. How does this ambient technology work?

Joe Zaccaria: Our ambient solution uses advanced sensor technology to monitor patient movements and vital signs without physical contact. No wearables, camera, or microphone are needed. Data collection happens in the background without any involvement by the patient or the care provider. This ensures patient privacy and comfort.

The patient’s heart rate, respiratory rate, and respiratory depth are continually monitored. Other information that can help providers improve patient care is also detected and tracked and can trigger alerts, including bed exits, position changes, and activity levels. Now, staff have equal access to insights driven by AI and analyzed through our proprietary algorithms to help them recognize fall risks, when pressure ulcers may be a concern, and other markers that could indicate an impact on the patient’s health.

When the Neteera System is integrated with patient electronic medical records (EMRs), it can help simplify work for caregivers and have broader use with patient data.

Q2. How does Neteera’s contactless remote patient monitoring system address such healthcare challenges as nursing shortages and population aging?

Joe Zaccaria: By automating the monitoring and measurement of vital signs, Neteera’s technology can reduce the time staff spend on manual tasks. Used proactively, the staff can set customized notifications for each patient to intervene earlier and enhance patient outcomes. We have clients using the Neteera System across care settings, including hospitals, long-term care, skilled nursing, and behavioral health facilities.

For elderly populations, continuous, non-intrusive monitoring can be used to improve quality of life and give both patients and families peace of mind. The system is based on the delivery of real-time data to help healthcare providers better optimize staff resources, reduce clinical blind spots, lower readmissions, and increase the rate of treat-in-place care.

Q3: What challenges did Neteera face in developing and deploying its ambient sensing technology, and how were they addressed?

Joe Zaccaria: Neteera made a conscious pivot from serving the automotive sector to healthcare. Serving the healthcare industry aligns better with our company’s goal to impact and improve people’s everyday lives. This shift meant entering a new industry and redesigning our technology to center on patients and healthcare workers. Neteera is very serious about protecting patient data. That means our platform is secure, reliable, and care-centered.

Q4. Beyond cost savings, can Neteera’s system make a financial difference for providers?

Joe Zaccaria: Healthcare providers can reduce expensive re-admissions and adverse outcomes by utilizing Neteera’s data and insights to identify early signs of a change in condition.

Our technology goes beyond what traditional vital signs monitoring delivers. The Neteera System provides alerts based on behavioral parameters, such as movement, bed exit, and position changes, assisting in the provision of holistic patient care.
